De film volgt het leven van een stel excentrieke en moedige Texaanse hoogspanningsmonteurs die met gevaar voor eigen leven het elektriciteitsnetwerk onderhouden. Beau (John Travolta) is een goedaardige man die zich schuldig voelt voor de dood van zijn broer en alleen zijn wees geworden nichtje Bailey (Kate Bosworth) opvoedt.
